Huya a été découvert le par Ignacio Ferrin à Mérida, au Venezuela ; ce plutino mesure 389 km de diamètre[4].
Satellite
Il est doté d'un satellite découvert le et désigné provisoirement S/2012 (38628) 1. Ce satellite mesure 202 km de diamètre et orbite à 1 800 km de Huya[4].
Dénomination
Il a été nommé en référence à Huya, le dieu de la pluie des Wayuu sud-américains. Sa désignation provisoire était 2000 EB173.

Le soir du , Huya occultera l'étoile TYC 5061-513-1. L'événement sera visible du sud de la péninsule scandinave au Moyen-Orient en passant de la Pologne à l'Europe du Sud-Est[5].

38628 Huya (/huːˈjɑː/ hoo-YAH), provisional designation 2000 EB173, is a binary trans-Neptunian object located in the Kuiper belt, a region of icy objects orbiting beyond Neptune in the outer Solar System. Huya is classified as a plutino, a dynamical class of trans-Neptunian objects with orbits in a 3:2 orbital resonance with Neptune. It was discovered by the Quasar Equatorial Survey Team and was identified by Venezuelan astronomer Ignacio Ferrín in March 2000.
