Die Circinusgalaxie (PGC 50779) ist eine spiralförmige Typ-2-Seyfertgalaxie vom Hubble-Typ Sb im Sternbild Zirkel am Südsternhimmel. Sie ist die uns am nächsten stehende bekannte Aktive Galaxie und befindet sich gerade einmal 4 Grad unterhalb der Galaktischen Ebene und ist etwa 13 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt.

Die Galaxie enthält große Mengen an turbulentem Gas, das in zwei Ringen um das Zentrum konzentriert ist. Der äußere Ring ist etwa 700 Lichtjahre vom Zentrum der Galaxie entfernt und zeigt starke Sternentstehung. Der innere Ring weist einen Radius von etwa 130 Lichtjahren auf.
Obwohl es sich um eine relativ nahe gelegene Galaxie handelt, wurde sie erst in den 1970er-Jahren entdeckt, da sie von Materie unserer eigenen Galaxie verdunkelt wird.
Die Typ-IIn-Supernova SN 1996cr wurde hier beobachtet.[2]

The Circinus Galaxy (ESO 97-G13) is a Seyfert galaxy[2] in the constellation of Circinus. It is located 4 degrees below the Galactic plane, and, at a distance of 4.0 Mpc (13 Mly), is one of the closest major galaxies to the Milky Way.[3] The galaxy is undergoing tumultuous changes, as rings of gas are likely being ejected from the galaxy.[citation needed] Its outermost ring is 1400 light-years across while the inner ring is 260 light-years across.[citation needed] Although the Circinus galaxy can be seen using a small telescope, it was not noticed until 1977[4] because it lies close to the plane of the Milky Way and is obscured by galactic dust. The Circinus Galaxy is a Type II Seyfert galaxy and is one of the closest known active galaxies to the Milky Way, though it is probably slightly farther away than Centaurus A.[ru] Циркуль (галактика)
