NGC 4535, también conocida como la Galaxia perdida es una galaxia espiral barrada situada en la constelación de Virgo, y que gracias al estudio de sus cefeidas realizado con ayuda del Telescopio Espacial Hubble se sabe que se halla a una distancia de 50 millones de años luz de la Vía Láctea, perteneciendo al Cúmulo de Virgo,[1] y siendo una de las mayores galaxias de dicho cúmulo.

NGC 4535 ist eine Balken-Spiralgalaxie vom Hubble-Typ SAB(s)c im Sternbild Jungfrau auf der Ekliptik, die schätzungsweise 85 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt. Sie ist Teil des Virgo-Galaxienhaufens, einer Ansammlung von Galaxien, die alle durch ihre gegenseitige Anziehungskraft zusammengehalten werden. Weil die Galaxie in kleineren Teleskopen leicht zu übersehen ist, wird sie manchmal "Lost Galaxy" (Verlorene Galaxie) genannt. Dieser Spitzname geht auf einen Artikel des Amateurastronomen Leland S. Copeland aus den 1950er-Jahren zurück.

NGC 4535 is a barred spiral galaxy located some 54[3] million light years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. It is a member of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies and is located 4.3° from Messier 87. The galactic plane of NGC 4535 is inclined by an angle of 43° to the line of sight from the Earth.[4] The morphological classification of NGC 4535 in the De Vaucouleurs system is SAB(s)c,[5] which indicates a bar structure across the core (SAB), no ring (s), and loosely wound spiral arms (c). The inner part of the galaxy has two spiral arms, which branch into multiple arms further away. The small[6] nucleus is of type HII, meaning the spectrum resembles that of an H II region.[5]
