The Sternberg Astronomical Institute (Государственный астрономический институт имени Штернберга in Russian), also known as GAISh (ГАИШ), is a research institution in Moscow, Russia, a division of Moscow State University. The institute is named after astronomer Pavel Karlovich Shternberg. It was founded in 1931, on the site of the observatory established by the university in 1831.[1]

The main-belt asteroid 14789 GAISH, discovered by Lyudmila Chernykh at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in 1969, was named in its honour.[1] The official naming citation was published on 6 January 2007 (M.P.C. 58595).[2]

El Instituto Astronómico Estatal Shtérnberg (en ruso, Государственный астрономический институт имени П. К. Штернберга, también conocido por sus siglas: ГАИШ ─GAISh─), del que forma parte el Observatorio Astronómico de la Universidad de Moscú, es una institución integrada en la Universidad Estatal de Moscú. Junto con el Departamento de Astronomía de la Facultad de Física de la citada universidad, se dedica a la labor de preparar astrónomos profesionales con carácter generalista. Su nombre es un homenaje al astrónomo ruso Pável Shtérnberg (1865-1920).

Государственный астрономический институт имени П. К. Штернберга (ГАИШ МГУ) — советское и российское научно-исследовательское учреждение при МГУ. Совместно с астрономическим отделением физического факультета, институт МГУ ведёт учебную работу по подготовке учёных и специалистов-астрономов широкого профиля. В состав института входят: Крымская лаборатория, лаборатория на Северном Кавказе, высокогорная Баксанская экспедиция, Кучинская астрофизическая обсерватория. Публикуются серийные научные издания «Труды ГАИШ» (с 1922) и «Сообщения ГАИШ» (с 1947)[1].
