Richard Damon Lines (Wynne (Arkansas), 21 aprile 1916 – Jonesboro (Arkansas), 29 giugno 1992) è stato un astronomo amatoriale statunitense.

Biografia

Nel 1936 ha sposato Helen Chambliss Williams da cui ha avuto una figlia, Chambliss Lines[1].

Attività astronomica

Lines, assieme alla moglie, è stato un attivo astrofilo che si è dedicato in particolare all'osservazione e alla fotografia di oggetti del profondo cielo, alla fotometria tramite CCD di stelle variabili nonché alla ricerca di comete[2]: a tal fine hanno costruito un osservatorio astronomico presso la cittadina di Meyer, situata nelle vicinanze di Prescott, in Arizona[3].

Nel 1962 ha coscoperto, con Tsutomu Seki, la cometa non periodica, nonché cometa radente, C/1962 C1 Seki-Lines divenuta la grande cometa del 1962[4].

Lines è stato membro dell'AAVSO che registrava le sue osservazioni col codice LIR[5] e dell'IAPPP (International Amateur-Professional Photoelectric Photometry)[6].

Riconoscimenti

Nel 1992 gli è stato assegnato, congiuntamente alla moglie, il Premio per il miglior risultato amatoriale della Società astronomica del Pacifico

Nel 1994 gli è stato intitolato un premio, l' I. A. P. P. P. Richard D. Lines Special Award in Astronomy[7].

Richard D. Lines (April 21, 1916 – June 29, 1992) was an American amateur astronomer. He started as a deep-sky observer and photographer, but later specialized in photometry of variable stars. He was a member of the American Association of Variable Star Observers and International Amateur-Professional Photoelectric Photometry (I.A.P.P.P.). Together with his wife Helen Chambliss Lines, also a keen astronomer, he built a small observatory in Mayer, Arizona. In 1962 he co-discovered the comet Seki-Lines. In 1992 he and his wife won the Amateur Achievement Award of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific for their work in the field of photoelectric photometry of variable stars. Short time after he was awarded, Richard Lines died. In 1994 the I.A.P.P.P. announced that its annual Special Award in Astronomy would carry his name as the Richard D. Lines Special Award in Astronomy.
