HD 179949 is a 6th magnitude star in the constellation of Sagittarius. It is a yellow-white dwarf (spectral class F8 V), a type of star hotter and more luminous than our Sun. The star is located about 90 light years from Earth and might be visible under exceptionally good conditions to an experienced observer without technical aid; usually binoculars are needed.

HD 179949 (GJ 749)[1][2] es una estrella en la constelación de Sagitario, visualmente situada a poco más de un grado de ψ Sagittarii. De magnitud aparente +6,25, apenas es observable a simple vista aunque sí es fácilmente visible usando binoculares. Se encuentra a 88 años luz de distancia del Sistema Solar. En 2000 se anunció el descubrimiento de un planeta de tipo «Júpiter caliente» en torno a esta estrella.
