R Andromedae (kurz R And) ist ein langperiodisch veränderlicher Stern vom Mira-Typ im Sternbild Andromeda. Seine scheinbare Helligkeit schwankt mit einer Periode von 409,2 Tagen und einer sehr großen Amplitude zwischen einem Maximalwert von 5,8 mag, wo er mit bloßem Auge sichtbar ist, und einem Minimalwert von 15,2 mag, wo er erst mit Hilfe eines 25-cm-Teleskops erkennbar ist.[5] Er gehört zur Spektralklasse S und sein Spektrum zeigt Absorptionsbanden von Zirkoniumoxid. Der amerikanische Astronom Paul Willard Merrill fand bei ihm (und auch anderen Sternen) Absorptionslinien des radioaktiven Elements Technetium,[6] womit er bewies, dass in Sternen Nukleosynthese stattfinden muss.

R Andromedae (R And) is a Mira-type variable star in the constellation Andromeda. Its spectral class is type S because it shows absorption bands of zirconium monoxide (ZrO) in its spectrum. It was among the stars found by Paul Merrill to show absorption lines of the unstable element technetium,[10] establishing that nucleosynthesis must be occurring in stars. The SH molecule was found for the first time outside earth in the atmosphere of this star.[11] The star is losing mass due to stellar winds at a rate of 1.09×10−6 M☉/yr.[5]
