Seginus oder γ Bootis (Gamma im Bärenhüter, Kurzform γ Boo) ist ein ca. 85 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernter Stern der Spektralklasse A7 III und stellt die rechte Schulter der mythologischen Gestalt des Bootes dar. Seginus ist ein schwach veränderlicher Stern vom Typ Delta-Scuti-Stern, dessen Helligkeit mit einer Periode von 0,29 Tagen zwischen 2,95 mag und 3,05 mag schwankt.

Sein Eigennamen Seginus (auch Ceginus) entstand durch Latinisierung aus einer arabischen Form des griechischen Namens des Sternbildes Bootes (Theguius). Ein weiterer Name Haris geht auf den arabischen Namen des Sternbildes zurück, Al Haris al Sama, was so viel wie „Wächter, Beschützer“ (des Großen Bären) bedeutet.

Am Himmel bildet Seginus mit den Sternen Arktur (α Boo) und Gemma (α CrB) ein gleichseitiges Dreieck, etwa in der Verlängerung der Deichsel des Großen Wagens (im Bild rechts oben).

Gamma Boötis, Latinised from γ Boötis, is a binary star[12] system in the northern constellation of Boötes the herdsman, forming the left shoulder of this asterism.[13] The primary component has the proper name Seginus /sɪˈdʒaɪnəs/, the traditional name of the Gamma Bootis system.[14] It has a white hue and is visible to the naked eye with a typical apparent visual magnitude of +3.03.[2] Based on parallax measurements obtained during the Hipparcos mission, it is located at a distance of approximately 85 light-years from the Sun, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −32 km/s.[6]

El nombre de Seginus viene de la latinización de una forma árabe del nombre griego de la constelación, Theguius. Otro nombre que recibe esta estrella, Haris, proviene del nombre árabe de la constelación, Al Haris Al Sama, que significa «el guarda».
