Sein Lichtwechsel wurde von den beiden Astronomen Müller und Kempf bei einer Zonenbeobachtung für die Potsdamer photometrische Durchmusterung im Jahre 1904 entdeckt.

W UMa ist ein Kontaktsystem, wobei beide Sterne eine gemeinsame Hülle besitzen und durch Gasströme Materie austauschen. Die Periode beträgt 0,33363749 Tage.

W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) is the variable star designation for a binary star system in the northern constellation of Ursa Major. It has an apparent visual magnitude of about 7.9,[2] which is too faint to be seen with the naked eye. However, it can be viewed with a small telescope.[8] Parallax measurements place it at a distance of roughly 169 light years (52 parsecs) from Earth.[1]

W Большой Медведицы (W UMa) — затменная переменная двойная звезда в созвездии Большой Медведицы. Она является прототипом контактных двойных звёзд типа W Большой Медведицы. В отличие от обычных затменных переменных, например, типа Алголя, у неё невозможно точно указать время начала и окончания затмения, поскольку обе звезды сильно искажены взаимной гравитацией и имеют эллипсовидную форму. Во время затмений видимая звёздная величина меняется от 7,75m до 8,48m с периодичностью 8 часов.
