Energía fantasma es una forma hipotética de energía oscura con ecuación de estado ${\displaystyle \ w<-1\ }$. Si se comprueba su existencia, esta clase de energía causaría que la expansión del universo acelerara tan rápidamente que el Big Rip ocurriría, destruyendo el universo en su totalidad.

Si la teoría es correcta, debido a que la energía fantasma se encontraría en todas partes, ésta aumentaría en intensidad de forma exponencial. Eventualmente, la energía fantasma sería tan fuerte que la energía dentro de los átomos no lograría contrarrestarla y el átomo sería destruido debido a la enorme fuerza tratando de separarlo; este proceso se repetiría destruyendo toda la materia incluida en el universo, en un evento conocido como el Big Rip.

Phantom-Energie ist in der Physik eine hypothetische Form der Dunklen Energie, für deren Zustandsgleichung w < − 1 {\displaystyle w<-1} gilt. Sie besitzt negative kinetische Energie und sagt die Expansion des Universums stärker voraus als eine kosmologische Konstante, die zu einem Big Rip führt.[1] Das Konzept der Phantom-Energie wird häufig verworfen, da es voraussetzt, dass das Vakuum instabil sei und Teilchen mit negativer Masse spontan auftreten können. Das Konzept ist eng gebunden an neue Theorien eines ständig neu erzeugten Dunklen Fluids mit negativer Masse, bei welchem die kosmologische Konstante als Funktion der Zeit verstanden werden kann.[2][3]
