It is an α2 CVn variable, ranging from 4.93 to 4.86 magnitudes with a period of 0.92 of a day.[5]

Unlike the majority of star pairs, the number attached to the Bayer designation 'L' is generally a subscript: L1. Its better-known companion L2 Puppis is similarly represented.[10]

L1 Puppis (L1 Pup / HD 56022 / HR 2746 / SAO 218546)[1] es una estrella de magnitud aparente +4,89 en la constelación de Puppis, la popa del mítico Argo Navis. Forma una doble óptica con L2 Puppis, situada al norte, estando ambas estrellas separadas al menos 10 años luz.[2] L1 Puppis se encuentra a 181 años luz del Sistema Solar.
