NGC 1979 (also known as ESO 487-24) is a lenticular galaxy in the Lepus constellation. It is about 78 million light-years from the Milky Way.[4] It was discovered by William Herschel on 20 November, 1784[5] and its size is 1.8 by 1.8 arc minutes.[3]

NGC 1979 ist eine elliptische Galaxie vom Hubble-Typ E/S0[2] im Sternbild Hase am Südsternhimmel. Sie ist schätzungsweise 69 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 50.000 Lichtjahren. Die Galaxie ist Mitglied der NGC 1964-Gruppe, zu der weiterhin NGC 1964, IC 2130 und IC 2137 gehören.
