NGC 6744 (also known as Caldwell 101) is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away[2] in the constellation Pavo (Peacock). It is considered as a Milky Way mimic in the immediate vicinity, displaying flocculent (fluffy) arms and an elongated core. It also has at least one distorted companion galaxy (NGC 6744A) superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds.[3] It was discovered from Parramatta in Australia by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop on 30 June 1826.[4]

NGC 6744 ist eine Balken-Spiralgalaxie vom Hubble-Typ SBbc[2] im Sternbild Pfau. NGC 6744 hat eine Helligkeit von 8,3 mag und eine Winkelausdehnung von 20,1 × 12,9 Bogenminuten. Damit gehört sie zu den scheinbar hellsten und größten Galaxien unseres Nachthimmels. Sie ist etwa 33 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von fast 150'000 Lichtjahren[3]. Die Galaxie besitzt eine deutliche Spiralstruktur, und in ihrem Zentrum befindet sich ein schwach ausgeprägter Balken. Dieser besteht hauptsächlich aus alten Sternen, die gelblich leuchten.
