NGC 5078 ist eine Spiralgalaxie mit aktivem Galaxienkern (LINER-Typ) vom Hubble-Typ Sa im Sternbild Wasserschlange südlich des Himmelsäquators. Sie ist schätzungsweise 91 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt, hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 105.000 Lichtjahren und einen Bulge mit einer Dicke von 50.000 Lichtjahren.[4]

Im selben Himmelsareal befinden sich u. a. die Galaxien NGC 5061, NGC 5101, IC 874, IC 879.

Das Objekt wurde am 28. März 1786 vom deutsch-britischen Astronomen Wilhelm Herschel mit einem 18,7-Zoll-Spiegelteleskop entdeckt,[5] der dabei „F, pS, E“[6] notierte. Sein Sohn, der britische Astronom John Herschel, beschrieb sie bei einer Beobachtung im Jahr 1835 mit „pB, S, pmE, psbM; has a star 7-8th mag following“.[6]

[en] NGC 5078

NGC 5078 is a spiral galaxy in the Hydra constellation, approximately 94 million light-years away from Earth.[2] It has a diameter of 127,000 light-years and is probably a member of the NGC 5061 group.[3] The dust lane of NGC 5078 is warped, probably by interaction with the nearby galaxy IC 879, which is itself distorted into an 'S' shape by the interaction.[4] At the presumed distance the two galaxies would have a minimal separation of about 61,000 light-years.[3] For comparison, the Large Magellanic Cloud is about 160,000 light-years from the Milky Way.
